Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center welcomes geriatric specialist, Shobha Karan, M.D., to the Waco community. Dr. Karan joins Dr. Sara George in our soon-to-be expanded Senior Health Center! Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Karan is fellowship trained in geriatrics from University of Connecticut Health Center. After earning her medical degree overseas, Dr. Karan completed a residency at The Brooklyn Hospital Center, Brooklyn, NY. She is a member of the American Medical Association and the American Geriatric Society.

Insurance Accepted: Most major insurance plans accepted including Medicare, Scott and White (SWHP), and BC/BS.

History

In recognizing the needs of our senior population, the Hillcrest Senior Health Center opened in October, 2006. we only see patients age 60 and older. We are specifically here for the senior population. See below.

The benefit of coming to the Hillcrest Senior Health Center is that you are receiving care from a physician who is board certified in geriatrics. In addition to medical concerns, we also have a licensed social worker on staff who assists the patient with other social and functional needs.

Specialty

The Hillcrest Senior Health Center is staffed with two geriatricians, a nurse practitioner, and a licensed social worker. A geriatrician is a doctor who specializes in care for the elderly. Just as a pediatrician tends to the needs of a child, a geriatrician cares for the special needs of seniors. Geriatricians approach each patient's needs individually, and possess the knowledge and expertise needed to accommodate seniors. They can better address issues such as memory loss, arthritis, osteoporosis, mobility and Alzheimer's Disease. Geriatrics includes more than treating physical problems; it means recognizing how health conditions affect seniors socially and emotionally as a patient progresses in age. As we get older our needs change. A geriatrician is trained to meet those needs.
